Week 5: Podcast

Week 5: Summary

Our class continues to move forward as we are now half way through October. This week students in the earlier class worked on designing a firewood rack in SketchUp, a three dimensional online drafting software. Students presented their design in class and the class settled on a final design to build. Team leaders were identified and students were split into groups to begin the building process over several class periods. Students practiced reading plans, measuring, and using a variety of hand tools and power tools to complete the final product. At the conclusion of the week, students are nearing completion of their project and we can begin learning how to lay roofing next week.

Some students took on an additional project this week to design and build jigs for the Intro to Woodworking students. A jig is something that holds a work piece and guides the tool to make the same repetitive cut or hole. Creating jigs help students understand how to use them and how they are built. These skills will definitely come in handy going forward in building future projects. Images of these jigs are included below.
