Week 3: Podcast

Week 3: Summary

The last few class sessions have focused on becoming familiar and comfortable working with common hand tools, power tools, and machines safely and efficiently. Students have worked on building a birdhouse and tool box according to plans. These projects gave students familiarity with reading plans, laying out lines and cutting to them. Students had safety demonstrations on numerous types of tools and machines and becoming comfortable working in our new lab facility. Through these projects, students reviewed basic woodworking knowledge and concepts and began to become familiar with proper terminology. Mr. Caccavale encourages them to use their new vocabulary and use the proper terms used in industry.

At the conclusion of the tool box project, students had their first experience with drafting software. Students practiced using SketchUp, and drew a 3-dimensional drawing of their finished project. With these two small projects now complete, students feel confident in their skills and are ready to begin tackling larger scale design and fabrication projects in the coming weeks and months.
